Restoring the First Two Latter-Day Saint Hymnals
In 1835, Emma Hale Smith was commissioned to compile the first hymnbook for the Church. More than simply gathering songs, she envisioned a collection that would help believers "sing by the Spirit, and with the understanding," providing hymns that reflected their faith and strengthened their worship.
In the preface to that first edition, she also expressed the hope that it would serve until there existed "a copious variety of the songs of Zion."
Just six years later, in 1841, Emma published a second hymnal in Nauvoo. Together, these two collections document the remarkable growth of the early Church and preserve the sacred poetry that shaped the worship of the Saints during one of the most significant periods of Restoration history.
The Emma Smith Collection seeks to restore both the 1835 Kirtland Hymnal and the 1841 Nauvoo Hymnal with historical integrity. Rather than rewriting or modernizing the original hymn texts, our goal is to preserve them as faithfully as possible while pairing them with carefully selected public-domain tunes that allow today's congregations to sing these hymns once again.
Each hymn has been carefully researched, newly engraved, and thoughtfully prepared to honor the original publications while making them accessible for modern worship.
We hope these editions will help readers, musicians, historians, and congregations rediscover the faith, testimony, and devotion found in the earliest hymnals of the Restoration.

A Collection of Modern Christian Hymns
The Lord's work is at hand again - and an invitation to rise up has been given. This modern collection is a testament to our desire to fulfill Emma's wish for a copious variety of the songs of Zion.
Every generation has found new words with which to praise God, testify of Jesus Christ, teach His gospel, and strengthen the faith of His people. Just as believers throughout history added their voices to the great treasury of sacred hymnody, we believe the writing of faithful, Christ-centered hymns continues and is necessary as a witness of our convictions today.
The Covenant Christian Hymns collection is a growing collection of original hymns and carefully selected contemporary texts submitted by fellowships who wished to have their favorite songs included in this modern selection.
The submissions were varied with song requests reflecting more of an orthodox feel, to contemporary Christian songs and even traditional style hymns.
Rooted in scripture and written with congregational singing in mind, these hymns are offered as a continuation of the rich heritage of sacred music that has blessed believers throughout the centuries.
