Sacred music has always been more than melody. Throughout history, hymns have taught doctrine, strengthened faith, united believers, comforted the weary, and given voice to worship across generations. They have preserved the language of faith, carried Scripture into the hearts of worshippers, and united congregations in praise to Jesus Christ.
When Emma Smith compiled the first Latter-day Saint hymnbook in 1835, she recognized that those who profess faith in Christ should have hymns that reflect their beliefs and inspire worship "by the Spirit, and with the understanding." She also expressed the hope that her collection would serve until there existed "a copious variety of the songs of Zion."
Nearly two centuries later, that invitation still resonates.
Covenant Christian Hymns exists to preserve the rich heritage of sacred hymnody while encouraging the continued writing, publishing, and singing of Christ-centered hymns for today. Through historical research, carefully prepared editions, new hymn collections, music, and an annual conference, we seek to honor the songs of the past while encouraging new voices that testify of Jesus Christ.
